Route 11 Dance Festival Contemporary Technique Master Class with He Jin Jang
In this intermediate/advanced class, we will incorporate some of the concepts in physics and bio-mechanics of our bodies (potential/kinetic energy, inertia, centripetal force, wave length, elasticity of fascia & etc.) into contemporary/modern technique. The class starts with a floor warm-up sequence and improvisation, moving onto standing warm-up and phrase work. Phrase works will explore different choice-making and somatic rigors of our bodies, inviting sequential movement, momentum, falling, and taking risks as tools.
Born and raised in Seoul, Korea, He Jin Jang is Assistant Professor of Dance Program at Hollins University. Jang has presented her works throughout New York and internationally including the Kitchen, Dixon Place, Movement Research at the Judson Church, Center for Performance Research, American Dance Festival (Durham, US), Studio 12 (Berkley, US), Performatica (Puebla, Mexico), WUK (Vienna, Austria), University of Bristol (Bristol, UK), Volkshochschule (Bern, Switzerland), National Museum of Contemporary Arts (Bucharest, Romania) and Seoul International Choreography Festival (Seoul, Korea) among others. Jang is a recipient of Arts Council Korea Fellowship (2009-11), Artist-in-Residency at Movement Research (2010-11), NYFA Mentorship Award for Immigrant Artists (2010-11), DanceWeb Fellowship (2011) and Webb Bierley Fellowship (2012-13). Jang's teaching credit includes Hollins University, American Dance Festival, ACDFA, University of Michigan, Anderson University, Movement Research, Dance New Amsterdam, Performatica, Deokwon Arts High School and Pasha Dance Company. www.hejinjangdance.com
