Houston Improv Festival - Workshops
Dianah Dulany:  Building Character
In this workshop, we'll explore techniques and tools to create dynamic, creative, and true-to-life characters instantly. Learn to make strong physical and emotional choices, create distinct points of view, and continue exploring and heightening them throughout scenes. Participants will be encouraged to push themselves beyond their character comfort zones, preparing them to bring a fun, entertaining new cast of characters into their scene work.

About Dianah:
A native Texan, Dianah has worked as a professional improvisor and instructor for over 27 years. She began her improv career in New York City before  moving to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to manage a non-profit theater company. There she performed with ComedySportz-Milwaukee for four years before being offered the opportunity to open her own club. She brought ComedySportz to Houston, Texas in 1990.

She has studied under Dick Chudnow (founder of ComedySportz), Keith Johnstone (founder of Theatersports), Paul Sills (original director of Chicago's The Second City), and Charna Halpern (co-founder of the ImprovOlympic, now known as The iO) among others.  Dianah is the founder and owner of ComedySportz-Houston as well as the Producer and Artistic Director of the company.

Jet Eveleth:  Physical Improv
Many improvisers become stuck in their heads, talking through scenes and not truly reacting. This course will focus on techniques that follow the fun and allow scenes to become more active. We will also look at ways of igniting the imagination with a new approach to physical characters and object work.

About Jet:
Jet has been a member of improv ensemble The Reckoning at the iO Theater for 12 years. She currently tours the comedy shows Adsit and Eveleth with Scott Adsit from 30 Rock and Jet and Paul with SNL's Paul Brittain.  In 2012 she toured Europe performing and teaching physical theater with The Second City as part of a cultural exchange with the US Embassy.

Jet also performed in the clown show Dal Vivo and The Chi-Town Clown Revue and studied with Paola Coletto and Philippe Gaulier, mentor of Sacha Baron Cohen.  She received her M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts and created the curriculum and taught for the Comedy Studies program at Columbia College.

Jet is currently faculty at The Second City Conservatory Program, the iO Theater, and and is the former artistic director of the Chicago Improv Festival.

Holly Laurent:  Finding your Improv Voice
Improvising can and should be really easy, and incredibly fun. Improv is at its best when it is personal, smart and emotional. This workshop is designed to strip away all the improv rules that are not serving you and empower your natural sense of play. You can trade in all the over thinking and the same stock characters for exploring new territory and fostering the voice that is uniquely yours. Holly will give you a few simple tools that work every single time, with any scene partner, in any venue. If improv has felt like work lately, it can become simple and fun again by clearing a path for your individual passion and creativity. Holly will tailor this workshop to your current needs and help you walk away feeling empowered and ready to play.

About Holly:
Holly Laurent is a member of the longstanding improv group The Reckoning and is a consulting writer for The Onion News Network. As a cast member of the Second City main stage in Chicago she wrote and performed in their past three revues Southside of Heaven, Who Do We Think We Are, and Let Them Eat Chaos. She trained at iO Chicago, the Annoyance Theater, 500 Clown, and toured with the Second City touring company. Holly holds a M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College and teaches improv everywhere.
