The Call to Hospitality: Cultivating the Capacity of Congregations to Welcome Others
This day and a half workshop will be led by Dr. Richard Beck (professor at Abilene Christian University and author of Unclean, The Slavery of Death and most recently Reviving Old Scratch).
This workshop is designed for congregations who desire to reach out to others but have also experienced some of the challenges of doing so. Dr. Beck summed up this challenge well when he wrote, "Calls to hospitality flounder when a congregation lacks capacities. A church has to have the capacity to make room if it wants to welcome the God who comes to us, uncomfortably so, as a stranger. Strangers push the tolerances of the community--theologically, socially and relationally. Consequently, those tolerances need to be cultivated and expanded."
This workshop is designed to help congregations in the Tacoma area cultivate and expand those hospitality capacities.
Dates: Monday, October 16 (9:00-4:00) Tuesday, October 17 (9:00-1:00)
Cost: Workshop fee is $100 per person and will include lunch and snacks.
Sponsoring congregations (those which donate $200 or more) can send up to four leaders for no extra cost. **Please contact Ruthie Kovanen at office@fircrestumc.org or (253) 564-7862 regarding this offer. She will get you registered and direct you where to send your donation.**
