Reflecting on Revolution: Commemorating the Centenary of 1917. An Afternoon with Historian and Humorist Jennifer Eremeeva
On August 26, the Museum of Russian Icons is hosting a lecture by author Jennifer Eremeeva on the 1917 Russian Revolution followed by a reception and book signing.

This year marks the centenary of the October Revolution of 1917 - one of the more monumental events in recent history, which profoundly shaped the present geopolitical reality. Once the most sacred date in the Soviet calendar, there are few, if any, plans to mark the occasion within Russia itself, in marked contrast to other parts of the world, where the anniversary has led to newly released books on the subject, exhibitions, symposia, and online projects.

In her talk, Ms. Eremeeva will reflect on the evolution of the cultural and political significance of the 1917 Revolution over the past century, to try and understand what motivates Russias political and cultural leaders to eschew this most significant of anniversaries. She will propose a few theories about what can be gleaned from this about Russias political future, and will conclude by inviting audience members to the discussion in what promises to be a lively Q&A session.

A reception featuring a signature cocktail and zakuska (Russian hors doeuvres) created by Eremeeva--who is also a food writer and curator--will follow the talk. She will be signing her books, Lenin Lives Next Door: Marriage, Martinis and Mayhem in Moscow and Have Personality Disorder, Will Rule Russia, both of which will be available for purchase on site.

Jennifer Eremeeva is a longtime American expatriate resident of Moscow who writes and blogs about Russian history, culture, daily life, cuisine, and travel within Russia and beyond. She regularly contributes articles and columns to a wide range of publications, including Reuters, BBCs Russia Service, The Moscow Times, Russian Life, City Style & Living, and Russia Beyond the Headlines.
