Revealing the Past: Hercules and Old Doll
Join Farmers & Distillers and Galerie Myrtis for the unveiling of the portraits by Ronald Jackson. Commissioned by Farmers & Distillers, these portraits pay tribute to Hercules and Old Doll, who worked in George Washingtons kitchen.

Hercules worked in Washingtons presidential kitchen in Philadelphia, and on the Mount Vernon Plantation. Jacksons portrait honors him as the first presidential chef and gifted culinarian. Old Doll, head cook at Mount Vernon, preceded Hercules in the kitchen. Jacksons portrait pays homage to Old Dolls cultivation of Hercules culinary skills.

We are proud to have the opportunity to celebrate Hercules and Old Doll for their contributions to Americas historic dining narrative - which has been shaped and is inextricably linked by those who were enslaved and free. The event will be kicked off by Dr. Joanne Hyppolite, Curator from the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, who will give introductory remarks on the contributions of African Americans to Americas food culture.
