The Integrated Farm
Description:
An integrated farm functions like a healthy ecosystem: each element is in relationship with all other elements in the system. Animals provide manure for crops and pastures, woodlands provide timber, mushrooms, and habitat, orchards provide food for humans, bees, and livestock, and humans keep this intricate cycle of fertility and fecundity running smoothly.
At Many Hands Organic Farm Jack Kittredge, Julie Rawson and their colleagues have been working for several decades to create and fine-tune such an ecologically complex system. During this workshop, Jack and Julie will explain and show the systems and interconnections among their various farm enterprises, which include vegetables, tree and berry fruits, pigs, beef cattle, pastured chickens and turkeys, bees, and mushrooms.
They will detail their latest innovations in their no-till system including use of cocktail cover crops and wood chips.  Failures and successes will be discussed. Jack will also explain how they built their passive solar home, root cellar, and greenhouse.

An essential component of this workshop will be an understanding of how to utilize all the resources available on the farm and the greater community to generate maximal fertility and food quality. From using forest soils to inoculate compost, to using free carbon-rich materials to support soil biology, Many Hands thrives from resources that are often underutilized. They will also discuss their many years of employing previously incarcerated and recovering substance abusers on the farm.

About the Instructor:

Julie Rawson and Jack Kittredge built their home in 1982 with the help of their four children, all under five years of age, and many friends. They have been certified organic at Many Hands Organic Farm since 1987 and are presently both heavily involved in educating about and experimenting with carbon sequestering practices on the farm. They both work for NOFA/Mass - Julie as the Executive Director and Jack as the Carbon Analyst and editor of NOFAs The Natural Farmer.
