The Art of Revision: What Does This Story Want to Be? (A Short Fiction Writing Workshop)
Why wait until Summer? The Word Barn is excited to present its very first SPRING writing workshop!
The Art of Revision: What Does This Story Want to Be?
Bernard Malamud once said, First drafts are for learning what your novel or story is about. Im a firm believer in letting a first draft bubble up and spill onto the page organically, in letting the mind go where it wants or needs to go. Later, a close reading and questioning of what is there and what isnt can help the writer discover what a particular story wants to be, which often starts out as a felt thing that is only later distilled to the concrete. In this short fiction workshop, each week youll give and get feedback on works in progress, as we all help each other uncover what our stories want to be. Well also set aside time to consider examples of some essential elements of fiction: character and setting; mood and tone; metaphoric potential and theme; and climaxes, epiphanies, and shifts. Join us as we think and feel our way to more fully-realized stories.
