13th: A co-sponsored event with East Bay School for Boys and St. Paul's Episcopal Parents Association
Filmmaker Ava DuVernay has made a powerful documentary called 13th. Taking its title from the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which formally abolished slavery but left a loophole about involuntary servitude for convicted criminals, the film puts forth a searing, opinionated interpretation of American history. It argues that there's a direct line from slavery to segregation to our current era of mass incarceration, in which we have 5 percent of the world's people but 25 percent of the prisoners, 40 percent of them African-American.

This viewing event and discussion is sponsored by EBSB and parents of St' Paul's Episcopal school. Viewing and discussing this film is a critical way to further the conversation that in our communities about equity and racial justice. While the conversation will not be about our schools in particular, it is way for us to join together, be challenged, and think about ways we can work towards racial justice in our communities.

This event is meant for adults, you can use discretion if you want to include 13+ aged youth.
