WHAT: On February the 5th of 2017, I am going to board the plane and head to Paris, France to spend four months studying at the Catholic University of Paris. I will be taking four French language courses and one sociology course all in French at the University. I will be staying with a French host family that lives not too far away from the Catholic university main campus.
WHY: The study abroad courses tuition will be covered by the scholarships and financial aid I receive at my home institution, Berry College. I am creating this gofundme campaign to help me come up with the extra travel expenses that the scholarships and financial aid do not cover. This study abroad trip to Paris will enable me to complete my French minor, earn course credits for my Sociology major, and find a community to plug myself into so to continue with service work as a Bonner scholar. Furthermore, going on this trip will give me an opportunity to immerse myself in the French society, improve my French language skills, and make international connections. Ultimately, it will broad my horizon and contribute to my goal of reaching my fullest potential. I wholeheartedly appreciate your contribution and support to this cause.
I deeply appreciate the continuous support from many of you who have contributed to my previous adventures. Due to your generosity, last summer I was able to go study abroad at the University of Ghana where I took three summer courses and interned at West African Aids Foundation. While interning at the West African Aids Foundation, I worked on an HIV/AIDS case study from a cultural perspective sponsored by the Sociology and Anthropology Department of Berry College. Additionally, I was able to complete my summer service commitment as a Bonner scholar by volunteering as an assistant teacher for five weeks at a primary school in Nairobi, Kenya. Moreover, I was able to visit Tanzania where I lived for 11 years prior to relocating to the US. Overall, in the summer of 2016, I earned 8-course credits, reconnected with Afrikan roots, made new connections, and immersed myself in Ghanaian, Kenyan, and Tanzanian societies. Thank you in large part for your contribution and support.
A month and a half ago, I completed my fall semester as a junior at Berry college. I took 16 credit hours, worked at Berry College Memorial Library as a service desk assistant, and volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club in Rome, Georgia for 10 to 12 hours a week.
WHO: I am Bertha Nibigira, originally from Burundi, a small country in Central Eastern Afrika. I was born in the Congo and raised in Tanzania. I came to the U. S. with my family eight years ago and I have been living in the states since then. Almost three years ago when I graduated from St. Nicholas Orthodox Academy, I was granted the privilege of attending Berry College on a Bonner scholarship. Bonner Scholars program is a community service and need-based scholarship granted to students who are committed to serving their communities. I am currently a Junior at Berry College with a Sociology and Anthropology major and a minor in French. After graduating from Berry college with a Bachor's degree in 2018, I am planning to attend graduate school to earn a Master's degree in Public Health.
