Icons in Transformation - Gala Opening
Icons in Transformation. Exhibition of the work of internationally known Russian artist Ludmila Pawlowska, Gala Opening Party December 10, 6:00 pm-9:00 pm at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 2925 Bonifacio Street in Concord, CA.  Admission to the Opening Gala is $25 and includes a chance to visit with the artist, live music, and refreshments.

Pawlowska, a Russian native who now lives in Sweden with her husband, Polish-born Jan Lech, encourages viewers to make their own interpretations of her modern, three-dimensional artwork, some of which are painted onto wood panels nearly ten feet tall.

The images are inspired by centuries-old icons that are a key component of the Orthodox Christian Church, of which Pawlowska is a member.

The Crucifixion is a common theme in many of her pieces, with the artist incorporating elements that help reveal another-worldly dimension.  Some have windows that reveal other images.  Others feature searching eyes, or have mirrors to bring the viewer into the art.

Pawlowska uses a variety of media to express her thoughts  from wire to limestone to bullet shell casings in her several anti-war pieces.

The exhibit has been around the world.  More than 100,000 people saw it during a three-month stay in Brussels, and over 70,000 were drawn to it in Dublin.  Attendance is similar to that enjoyed by the King Tut exhibit several years ago in San Francisco.

On its current U.S. tour, the exhibit has been in Episcopal churches in Seattle, Cincinnati, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Memphis.  Before coming to the Bay Area, it was in Carmel, an after it closes in Clayton and Concord, it will move on to San Diego.

The Icons in Transformation exhibit runs Dec. 11 through Feb 17.   will be displayed simultaneously at both St. Johns Episcopal Church, 5555 Clayton Road in Clayton and at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 2925 Bonifacio Street,in Concord.  Exhibit hours are 4:00 pm  8:00 pm, Thursday through Sunday. Admission is free, but donations accepted. 925-890-7839, www.stjohnsparish.org; www.stmichaelsconcord.org.
