"Drinking In America"

Veterans In Performing Arts- VIPA presents Drinking In America, by Eric Bogosian, at West End Studio Theater in Portsmouth, NH, opening on October 21st and running two weeks. This show will be part of a series of events helping to raise funds for Veterans In Performing Arts-VIPAs mission.

Performance times will be Friday, October 21st at 8 PM, Saturday , October 22nd at 3 PM and 8 PM, Sunday, October 23rd at 3 PM and 7 PM, Friday, October 28th at 8 PM, Saturday, October 29th at 3 PM and 8 PM and Sunday, October 30th at 3 PM and 7 PM .

Written to be performed by one actor, the show portrays over a dozen different characters all displaying some form of inebriation or addiction, either to alcohol, drugs, power, a sense of being normal, money, love or sex.

First produced in the 1980s, Bogosians searing writing and savagely funny eye for human nature are more relevant now than ever.

Characters portrayed in this piece include a power-hungry connected Hollywood producer, an alcoholic homeless man harassing passerby, an addict defending his choice to avoid pain and loneliness in this life through heroin (even as he speaks of his family), an immigrant restaurant owner imploring his young cook to just learn how to merge into Americas melting pot, a yuppie going over a checklist of all those things that make him normal and successful and an eerily familiar figure who just wants his audience to make America great again.

VIPAs Artistic Director Jonathan Rockwood Hoar will take the stage for this show (having performed Drinking In America at The Players Ring in two different productions, as well as Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Pounding Nails Into the Floor With My Forehead, both by Mr. Bogosian) and will be directed by several VIPA members, with each member directing a specific section of the show as well as the overall production.

Playwright and actor Eric Bogosian grew up in nearby Woburn, Massachusetts and is the author of Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll, subUrbia, Talk Radio, Funhouse and other plays and has appeared in many films and television shows, including the film adaptation of Talk Radio, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Scrubs and Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. He is a Guggenheim Fellow, and the recipient of many awards, including several Obie and Drama Desk awards and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tickets will be available through Brown Paper Tickets at http://VIPA.brownpapertickets.com and at the door on an as-available basis.

General Admission is $20.00.

ABOUT VETERANS IN PERFORMING ARTS- VIPA:

VIPA is established to integrate veterans from all branches of the U.S. Military into the performing arts, to include acting, dance, music, writing, poetry, film , directing, producing , choreographing, tech work and others skills unique to the performing arts.

Recognizing there can be a disconnect between the military and civilian lifestyles that can only deepen post-deployment (particularly after intense combat experiences), VIPA was started by and is comprised of veterans who are experienced in the performing arts and are willing to help other veterans overcome feelings of isolation and stress by helping them become part of a new community where many of the same elements of the military lifestyle, including teamwork, practice and execution, leadership and ability to improvise, trouble-shooting, attention to detail and other facets co-exist.

VIPA will produce original works and established works with the eventual goal of 50-75% of the participants being United States Military Veterans, from production staff to crew to performers while avoiding excluding anyone.

VIPA will attempt to strike a balance between being inclusive and striving for quality in its work and highlighting participants strengths rather than their weaknesses. Quality will not be sacrificed even with a goal of inclusivity.

Additionally, VIPA will insist that members display those same personal characteristics that are valued throughout the military communities, including integrity, sacrifice, teamwork, strong work ethics, improvisation in the face of adversity, diversity, discipline, growth, leadership, duty, respect, honor, personal courage and selfless service.

VIPA will work with other venues as it grows, providing the central purpose of the group, to produce theater, film and other performing arts works by and with US Military Veterans, is not compromised.
