Sparkles and the Black Weeping Woman
A play of magical realism follows the life of Sparkles, an impoverished 18-year-old Latina being pressured by her mother to marry a young man from a wealthy, corrupt family. Although she loves Sang, Sparkles is soured on marriage and the expectations of society. The legendary La LLorona, who is embodied as a revolutionary rebel, appears to Sparkles and other women to help them escape from entrapment and danger. Sparkles' guardian angel flies out of prison to counsel Sparkles as she struggles with her commitment to Sang and becomes swept up in an old revolutionary feud.
