Alon Shepon, PhD candidate at the Weizmann Institute of Science
Alon Shepon is an environmental scientist completing his doctoral degree at the Weizmann Institute of Sciences in Israel. His current research aims to understand the environmental implications of production and consumption of animal-based products within the US food system and on a global scale.
Feeding a growing population while minimizing environmental degradation is a global challenge. It is now clear that there is an enormous global impact of livestock on air and water quality, ocean health, land use, and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Adequately feeding 9 plus billion humans will require thoroughly rethinking food production and consumption. This talk will examine the consequences of dietary shifts on the environment and food security.
This raises the possibility of conflict, of dietary guidelines that may improve health outcomes while increasing environmental burdens associated with food production or, conversely, that reduce environmental burdens while undermining public health or personal health outcomes.
