Our Archetypology of Everyday Life Committee members are delighted and honored to announce and invite you to join us in Dr. Dennis Slattery's Series, Our Daily Breach: Exploring your personal myth through Herman Melville's Moby Dick. In his workshops, we will ask: Do classics of literature invite and find themselves compatible with an archetypal/alchemical reading of them? What would this method look like? We will explore what this method includes and asks each of us as readers if these classics like Herman Melville's Moby-Dick address less the ego than the deeper Self as Jung understood the term. It also asks if the poetics of these works seeks a dialogue with the unconscious rather than only consciousness. We know from experiencing Dr. Slattery's previous excellent presentations that his work is thorough and thoughtful, applicable to our lives and work. He brings wisdom of the literature and myth of the past into our considerations of everyday life in the present.
Dr. Slattery's book, Our Daily Breach: Exploring Your Personal Myth Through Herman Melville's Moby-Dick offers both a way of understanding what has generally been called the greatest novel of the American myth while simultaneously exploring ones own personal myth. Its added feature is that it is an interactive book in allowing readers to meditate on one question per page for each day of the year and to undercover many facets of ones personal myth through cursive writing. Dr. Slattery will lead us through these meditations as a way into the hero's journey of Moby Dick through a combination of individual writing meditations, didactic, and experiential teaching methods. In addition, he will be integrating lectures on the topics of poetic knowledge, mimesis, Jung's grasp of the poet's journey, and the structure and intentions of the epic, Moby Dick.
Dennis Patrick Slattery Ph.D. is a core faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute who helped shape the development of the Mythological Studies program. He has been teaching for 40 years from elementary to secondary, undergraduate, and graduate programs. He has received the prominent rank of Distinguished Core Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute. His areas of emphasis include the poetic imagination, writing and reading as mythic activities, the relation of psyche, spirit and matter, and the place of contemplation within the academic setting. He is the author of several books including:The Idiot: Dostoevskys Fantastic Prince; The Wounded Body: Remembering the Markings of Flesh; Grace in the Desert: Awakening to the Gifts of Monastic Life; Harvesting Darkness: Essays on Literature, Myth, Film and Culture and A Limbo of Shards: Essays on Memory, Myth and Metaphor. With Lionel Corbett he has co-edited Depth Psychology: Meditations in the Field as well as Psychology at the Threshold. With Glen Slater, he has co-edited Varieties of Mythic Experience: Essays on Religion, Psyche and Culture. He currently teaches: Approaches to the Study of Myth; Mythopoetic Images; Joseph Campbell: Metaphor, Myth, and Culture; Epic Imagination.

Each of the presentations in the Fall series offer 9.5 continuing education credits for Psychology and Social Work in particular and may be extended to other disciplines.
