Tripsichore Yoga Theatre performs THE FALLEN
THE FALLEN
Characters, once mighty, fall from grace by some fatal error or frailty. What might happen to THE FALLEN afterwards? How do they go on? Is it worth the struggle? The piece features choreography and performances by Tripsichore aces Edward Clark and Nikki Durrant.
Clark writes: "It's understandable, but funny to us, that people seem to expect yoga to be all sweetness and light. Yoga is not a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases - a panacea. Rather, it is a variety of physical and mental techniques that are used for concentrative purposes. In THE FALLEN, we are using the physical language of yoga to express the drama of what it is to try and find equilibrium in difficult circumstances."

"Tripsichore [;Yoga Theatre]; is yoga's answer to Cirque de Soleil. Fusing traditional yoga asanas with inventive choreography, their performances give audiences the sensation of participating in an extended meditation floating through a dream world of mystical landscapes." YOGA JOURNAL
"If you do a yoga practice, you'll be enchanted by this magical production." WHAT'S ON
TRIPSICHORE HISTORY Based in London, England, Tripsichore Yoga Theatre has become one of the most extraordinary innovations to emerge from the yoga discipline. This contemplative style of movement theatre is a sensual exploration of spirituality that unites the mind and body. The breath guides the body through a safe, fluid flow of postures that creates stunningly spectacular visual poetry.
Tripsichore began in 1979 as a company devoted to creating full length dance narratives. We explored a variety of stylistic forms including punk ballet, conventional modern dance and strict neoclassical technique. We used masks, performed with rock bands and did pop videos. While yoga was always a part of our training, it wasn't until 1992 that we realized the expressive potential and choreographic viability of yoga postures.
Once we began to devise works using yoga asanas, their extraordinary artistic logic became evident. Surprisingly, it would seem that there has been no orthodox tradition for using yoga technique to create dances in the 5,000-year history of the discipline.
The postures intrinsically possess a sumptuous beauty and fluidity. They are the ideal vehicle to express the themes of harmony, balance, spirituality, ecstasy, bliss and mysticism because they are exactly about these subjects in and of themselves. We are now many years into this experiment and each day brings new discoveries.
EDWARD CLARK, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Edward has been Artistic Director of Tripsichore since 1979, writing and producing yoga based work, which he and his company have performed around the world. He began studying yoga in 1979. Noteworthy among his teachers are Narayani and Giris Rabinovitch, but he confesses huge admiration for the Ashtanga Vinyasa, Sivananda, Iyengar and Viniyoga practices.
He fuses his keen artistic vision with a deep understanding of the essential pursuits of yoga practice and, in combining these, his teachings synthesize the use of breath, asana, choreography and philosophy into a demanding, entertaining and exhilarating amalgam.
In addition to constant touring, teaching and performing globally, he released a 2 DVD set in 2006 devoted to explaining the practice and with a record of some of the Tripsichore repertoire. In 2007, he co-released a double comedy CD called Kill The Guru.
NIKKI DURRANT Nikki began practicing yoga in 1991. She came to yoga from a disciplined athletic background. Whilst growing up, she was involved in a variety of sports which eventually opened her up to the world of Asanas. Her goal is to achieve wholeness of being through a diligent and disciplined yoga practice
She teaches Dynamic, Ashtanga Vinyasa Primary Series, and Tripsichore Beginners, Intermediate and Advance Technique, in Private Tuition and Workshops. Her intention is to inspire, challenge and exhilarate all levels of yoga practitioners, while continuing on her own yogic path.
Nikki began studying with Tripsichore in 2005 and joined the company as a performer in 2007. She has had a leading role in all the Tripsichore productions since then and has also undertaken choreography for the company. As the leading practitioner of Tripsichore style yoga, she has taken on teaching responsibilities in the UK, US, the Far East, Mexico and Europe.
