The Indonesian Parrot Project (IPP) has been actively working since 2001 in Indonesia to conserve and protect highly endangered parrots from trapping and smuggling. This is done through work at the grassroots level with local communities in parrot rich areas of the archipelago. Poverty is a serious problem in these villages, so creating programs to provide sustainable income to the community curtails the need for trapping and smuggling.
To date, with support from donors, sponsors and grants we have been able to release over 1200 parrots back into the wild that were confiscated from the illegal trade.
This is done through programs which include education, community economic development, and working with local leaders. Since 2007, we rediscovered a cockatoo which was thought to gone extinct with only 7 birds on one island. Through our efforts we have raised the level of birds to a current population of 22.
On August 28, we are holding a fundraiser at the Hillcrest Farm in Occidental. IPP is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization so your gift is tax deductible.
Spend an afternoon with us in beautiful Sonoma Wine Country enjoying local wines and bites, tour the ranch, meet members of the team to learn about our work in Indonesia and participate in our silent auction and raffle with many wonderful treasures from Indonesia. If you are planning on participating or purchasing it is best to bring cash or checks as wifi is sketchy.
We have learned that even in what is considered a very difficult country to work in that if we pull together we can make a difference not only to protect and conserve endangered species, but to bring hope and a better life to the people of Indonesia.
Warm regards,
Bonnie Zimmermann, Director, Indonesian Parrot Project
