Words for Rice: Prose & Poetry
Join us for delicious food, lovely people, and a night of beautiful poetry and storytelling.  Words for Rice is a community fundraiser featuring local writers and artists.  

Light appetizers provided.  Beverages and additional food available for purchase. All donations help support the incredible work of the ACRS Food Bank in providing nutritious, culturally familiar food to thousands in our community.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Wancy Young Cho is a writer of fiction, essays and screenplays. His work has appeared in The Windy City Times, No Touching Magazine, Ghost Factory Magazine and  Hair Trigger. His short story "In a Glimpse" took First Place in Traditional Fiction by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, and his screenplay Sah Ee Gu received First Place for Feature-length Screenplay in the Written Image Screenwriting Competition. He has an MFA from Columbia University.

Ramon Isao is a recipient of the Tim McGinnis Award for Fiction, as well as fellowships from Artist Trust and Jack Straw Cultural Center.  His writing has appeared in The Iowa Review, Ninth Letter, Hobart, The American Reader, and elsewhere.  His screenplays include Dead Body, Zombies of Mass Destruction, and Junk (in which he co-stars).  He has an MFA from Columbia University, and he teaches creative writing at Hugo House.

Arlene Kim's first collection of poems, What have you done to our ears to make us hear echoes? (Milkweed Editions), was a recipient of the American Book Award and a finalist for the Washington State Book Award. She lives in Seattle where she edits by day and writes by night.


ABOUT THE WALK & ACRS FOOD BANK:

The Walk for Rice is a fundraising campaign featuring a local events, and 2.5 mile walk/run at the end of June.  Each year, over 1,000 participants help raise money for Asian Counseling & Referral Services to buy rice and other foods for the ACRS Food Bank.  The ACRS Food Bank is one of the most visited food banks in King County, and the only one if the state that regularly provides foods that are familiar to the Asian and Pacific Islander diet including rice, tofu, noodles, fish, and fresh produce.

Martha is a volunteer and organizer for the 2016 Walk for Rice working with others to launch fundraising events, raise awareness about the specific needs in Asian Pacific Islander communities.


Michelle was born in the suburbs of Detroit, and grew up in the suburbs of Nashville. She is the author of two chapbooks: landscape/heartbreak, and Last Night I dreamt of Volcanoes.  http://www.michellepenaloza.com/


Jane is a recipient of Meridian's 2013 Editor's Prize, with poems appearing in journals such as CutBank, Hayden's Ferry Review, ZYZZYVA, The Volta, Salt Hill, and named Best New Poets in 2012.  Her chapbooks include: Dendrochronology, Impossible Map.
