Shrew
The Shrew has remained consistently popular because it reinforces a profoundly held belief in its audiences. In the four hundred years since Shakespeare wrote the play the patriarchal system has remained entrenched in our society The play enacts the defeat of the threat of a woman's revolt. -Penny Gay, As She Likes It: Shakespeares Unruly Women
SHREW is an original feminist response to Shakespeares The Taming of the Shrew created by Christine Freije, Mark Rud, and an all-female ensemble of performers and devisers. Combining Shakespeares text, original movement, music and found text, SHREW dissects the bards controversial problem play in the context of a contemporary culture of misogyny. The ensemble and creative team wrestle with the dark corners of this work by the playwright we adore and ask, head-on, Why the fuck are we still doing this play?
