WHY IS THIS SO EPIC? You may have heard about Henrietta Lacks immortal life from a book published in 2010 Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, (http://www.amazon.com/Immortal-Life-Henrietta-Lacks/dp/1400052181)
or a 2013 local seventh-grader, Jessica Stump who won National History Day with her research, (http://www.kerngoldenempire.com/news/top-stories/history-project-leads-to-a-teens-future)
or maybe you heard about it from the buzz of Oprah producing and starring in the HBO documentary about the HeLa cell line? (http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/oprah-the-immortal-life-of-henrietta-lacks-hbo-films-1201764466/)
WHO IS SHE Henrietta Lacks was an African American woman who was the unwitting donor of cells from her cancerous tumor that was biopsied during treatment for cervical cancer at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. These cells were cultured by George Otto Gey to create the first human immortal cell line, now known as the HeLa cell line, which is still used for medical research.[;;;;3];;;;
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT? Henriettas cells were the first immortal human cells ever grown in culture. They were essential to developing the polio vaccine. They went up in the first space missions to see what would happen to cells in zero gravity. Many scientific landmarks since then have used her cells, including cloning, gene mapping and in vitro fertilization.
