Anila Sinha Foundation (ASF) Announces an Unforgettable Evening of Romeo and Juliet. Celebrating 400 Hundred years of Shakespeares Work
An unforgettable evening of spellbinding performances to commemorate 400 years of Shakespeares work! Anila Sinha Foundation (ASF) is proud to present Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet in a Kathak ballet form on Sunday July 10th, 2016 at McAninch Arts Center at College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137. Pt. Birju Maharaj and Ms. Saswati Sen, the creators of this unique and innovative idea, will be on stage with their troupe of more than 30 top notch performers from India, for this one of a kind enchanting and enlightening performance. Only one show has been planned for Chicago. For the first time this tale has been adapted and presented in the Indian classical dance Kathak style. Its original music score has been composed by Pt. Birju Maharaj in collaboration with Jazz maestro Louis Banks. The performance is choreographed by internationally acclaimed Kathak artist Saswati Sen; and stage lights and special effects are created by internationally renowned Dinesh Poddar. This eternal love saga has stirred millions of hearts for centuries and has inspired poets, musicians and creative artistes from all over the world to recount the passion and pathos inherent in the story. We expect a full house for this incredible dance extravaganza. As an added value and to set the mood for the main even Romeo and Juliet, we plan to begin the evening with a unique and memorable Kathak and Tabla performance by world renowned Kathak Maestro Padma Vibhushan (India's 2nd highest civilian award) Pandit Birju Maharaj and Tabla Maestro Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri. Romeo and Juliet not only celebrates the history, it also showcases the beauty of Kathak as it stretches its wings and covers new horizons. The multi-talented Pandit Birju Maharaj has won many accolades, including Padma Vibhushan in 1986, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Kalidas Samman. He won the Filmfare award for best Choreography for the song 'Mohe rang do laal' from 'Bajirao Mastani' in 2016 and the National Film Award for Best Choreography: Vishwaroopam 2012. Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri is known all over the world for his purity of sound, depth of knowledge, rhythmic creativity, and dedication to teaching the art of Tabla. He is considered one of the greatest living musicians and tabla virtuosos of our time. Anila Sinha Foundation, a not for profit organization, was established in memory of Mrs. Anila Sinha, a staunch promoter of Kathak Dance and Music. Since its inception in 1999 ASF has presented a number of performances every year to promote the most popular dance form of north India, Kathak, with its associated music and stagecraft.
