The heart that breaks open can contain the whole universe.
-Joanna Macy

Pain is a sign we are really alive.  Our predominate Western culture teaches us to move on quickly, avoid our feelings, and live in isolation and fear of rejection.  Living in isolation requires us to avoid the natural  process of allowing our feelings to move through us.  The tragic result is various stages of suppression and numbness we can come to exist in individually and as a collective.  We need not be afraid to be broken open.  There is no way that any of us can fall out of the web of life.

One of the worst things we suffer from is privatized pain.
-Francis Weller

Humans have been grieving in community throughout history.  Only in the past hundred years or so have people become isolated in their expressions of grief.  Certain depths of emotion are only accessible to us collectively.  Grief rituals offer us the necessary container and connection for us to move through our deepest feelings.  Together, we will create a strong container to hold us as we grieve the loss of people we have walked with, dreams, identity, and connection with our Ancestors, Mother Earth, and Spirit.  This work will make us stronger, resilient, and open space for joy.

Our day together will consist of a morning workshop exploring grief and an afternoon ritual inspired by the Dagara people of Burkina Faso, as taught to us by our beloved teacher, Sobonfu Somé.  You will have the opportunity to share about your process in small groups.

On the day of the workshop, please bring:
*Lunch
*Snacks
*A water bottle
*Instruments (drums, rattles, etc.)
*Layers
*5-7 biodegradable objects from nature that you can leave
*Flowers in vessels
*Altar items, which you will take back home with you (photos, mementos, etc.)
*A blanket
*Battery-operated candles (no flames)
*Notebook and pen (optional)
