12 Angry Jurors
Today in America issues around race permeate our daily existence as episodes of violence against minorities, particularly African American males, stream across our Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages.  From locations throughout the country the names of the victims challenge our beliefs in our criminal justice systems ability to be fair and just.  Names like  Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott and Freddie Gray  to name just a few.  And here at home Laquan McDonald, a 17-year-old teenager who was shot 16 times by a member of the Chicago Police Department on October 20, 2014.  The investigation of the cover-up by the Chicago Police Department and elected officials resulted in termination of the Police Superintendent and shook the very foundations of City Hall and the Office of the District Attorney.  12 Angry Jurors is set amidst this backdrop.

Set in a present-day Chicago courtroom, 12 Angry Jurors takes you on a journey to the very heart of our criminal justice system today.  At the center of the story is the question, Is it possible for a member of the minority class in America to get a fair trial?  A blistering character study and an examination of the American melting pot and the judicial system that keeps it in check, 12 Angry Jurors holds at its core a deeply patriotic faith in the U.S. legal system.  The play centers on Juror Eight, who is at first the sole holdout in an 11-1 guilty vote.  Eight sets her sights not on proving the other jurors wrong but rather on getting them to look at the situation in a clear-eyed way not affected by their personal prejudices or biases.  At intermission for each performance the audience will be invited to vote guilty or not guilty.  How will you vote?

IMMERSION OPPORTUNITIES
At Oil Lamp we seek to offer our guests opportunities to experience our theatrical works in a deeper way.  Along those lines, we recommend the following works:

MOVIE:
12 Angry Men is a 1957 film directed by Sidney Lumet.  The movie was based on the play of the same name written by Reginald Rose in 1955.  The movie starred many of Hollywoods heavyweights at the time including: Henry Fonda, Lee Cobb, E.G.Marshall, Jack Klugman and Ed Begley.  The film was nominated for Academy Awards in the categories of Best Director, Best Picture and Best Writing of Adapted Screenplay.  It lost to the movie Bridge on the River Kwai in all three categories.

PODCAST:
Radiolab  Season 5/Episode 3  Race (Radiolab.org/story/91653-race)
Throughout 12 Angry Jurors the concept of race and the inherit bias toward other races swirls around the room as the jury deliberates.  But what exactly is the concept of race?  Is it possible to accurately assess an individuals race based on their appearance?  What does science say about this?  Radiolabs podcast on Race tackles these issues directly.  When the human genome was first fully mapped in 2000, Bill Clinton, Craig Venter, and Francis Collins took the stage and pronounced that "The concept of race has no genetic or scientific basis." Great words spoken with great intentions. But what do they really mean, and where do they leave us? Our genes are nearly all the same, but that hasn't made race meaningless, or wiped out our evolving conversation about it.

DOCUMENTARY - TELEVISION:
OJ: Made in America  A Five Part 30 for 30 Documentary
"O.J." revisits - and redefines - it all. The domestic abuse. The police investigation. The white Bronco chase. The trial of the century. The motive, the blood, the glove. The verdict. The aftermath. Drawing upon more than seventy interviews- from longtime friends and colleagues of Simpson to the recognizable protagonists of the murder investigation to observers and commentators with distinct connections to the story - the docu-event is an engrossing, compelling, and unforgettable look at a tantalizing saga. Because at the end of what seems like a search for the real truth about O.J. Simpson, what's revealed just as powerfully is a collection of indelible, unshakeable, and haunting truths about America, our criminal court system today, and about ourselves.

The performance runs 2 hours including intermission.
