"Black Tie" a play by A.R. Gurney
Black Tie, a comedy by A.R. Gurney opens on April 28th, presented by The Calistoga Theater Co.

Calistoga, St. Helena, Yountville, CA March 14, 2015
Calistoga Theater Company will present A.R. Gurneys play Black Tie, directed by Sharie Renault, at the St. Helena Presbyterian Church, 1428, Spring Street. This whimsical romp is set in an Adirondack resort suite and told from the perspective of the grooms family on the eve of their only sons wedding.

The parents of the groom are busy with last-minute preparations for the rehearsal dinner.  Curtis, the grooms father, (Fred Ireland) while working on his speech, has an unworldly visit from his fathers ghost.  The Father (Vince Black) is hell-bent on helping his son prepare the perfect toast while commenting on the proceedings as they unfold around him.  Mimi, Curtis wife and the grooms mother, (Christina Julian) balances critical wardrobe decisions with intermittent interruptions to run downstairs and arrange escort cards that are being rearranged to accommodate a last-minute guest.   Elsie, the grooms sister, (Megan Yant and Tiana  Fillman in alternating performances), reports on the shenanigans of the wedding party down at the pool.  Laughter abounds as this circus of the unexpected unfolds.

Things take a turn for the touching when the groom, Teddy, (Markus Baumbach) arrives at his parents room to share his misgivings about getting married after all.  Generational gaps, family values and social etiquette are stripped bare as the untraditional values of the bride and her family conflict with the rigid ideals of her in-laws.

The New York Times called Black Tie, one of Gurneys most enjoyable plays in years, a modest but effortlessly engaging comedy about the generational shifts.  Dont miss out on this charming comedy.  Tickets are now available.  Reduced group and student rates available.

Black Tie is directed by Sharie Renault, graphics by Chris Zinn, Lighting by Kevin Horowitz, set design by Tiana Fillman.
