"Embracing Hope in Despairing Times" with Luther E. Smith (presented by Companions on the Inner Way)
Spirituality Retreat: EMBRACING HOPE IN DESPAIRING TIMES
Whether because of our personal trials or our perceptions that community is coming apart, we experience times when life overwhelms us. Days of distress become a season of despair. If we think only of hope as the anticipation of change in unwanted circumstances, then our understanding and experience of hope shrivels to escaping anxieties and fears. Hope empowers us to be wholly alive to the fullness of life. Hope comes to us as transforming energy from God - energy for us to experience faith and love as hopes companions. This retreat will focus on spiritual practices that prepare us to become a people of hope in all seasons of the journey.
About Our Speaker: Luther E. Smith, Jr. is Professor Emeritus of Church and Community at the Candler School of Theology of Emory University. He writes, teaches, and speaks extensively on issues of church and society, interfaith cooperation, child advocacy, congregational renewal, Christian spirituality, and thought of Howard Thurman. He is Senior Consulting Editor for the publication of the Howard Thurman Papers Project.
