Small-Scale Dairy: Goat Health and Lactation
Description:
Spend the afternoon in the goat yard with farmer Allison Houghton and  Halé Sofia Schatz, who has over 40 years of experience with holistic human nutrition. We will explore preventative and holistic approaches to goat health and lactation, with a focus on high quality nutrition and behavioral care. This focus supports a healthy herd, longer lactation periods, higher levels of production, and a higher quality product, whether milk, yogurt or cheese.

Managing nutrition and health can be especially important for dairy production in a smaller urban or homestead environment. Together we will also explore the importance of how psychological and physical health problems in goats can be supported with preventative measures of daily exercise, high quality feed and wild forage, minerals and a clean living area. The workshop will focus on techniques and set-ups for a small, urban herd, but many of the same principles for optimum health can be applied to larger or more rural settings.
