Spring Bee Hive Management & Swarm Prevention with Pollinate Farm & Garden Supply
Join us for a Workshop on Spring Bee Hive Management & Swarm Prevention with Alameda County Beekeepers Association member and local hobbyist beekeeper and bee breeder Alan Kramer. Learn what management steps to take before the arrival of Spring to prepare your colony for exponential growth and a successful honey crop. Learn how to recognize the early signs that your colony may be preparing to swarm (swam prep) and various intervention techniques to prevent half of your colony taking off with your laying queen.
This class covers the basics of the growth cycle of bee colonies that have successfully made it through the shortest and coldest days of winter and are poised for explosive growth with the arrival of warmer weather, longer days, and increased nectar flow. We will review the process of swarming and how to recognize the various signposts along the way to swarming that can trigger interventions to avoid that unfortunate (but natural) outcome. You will learn a range of spring management techniques including brood management and nectar management (checkerboarding), as well as the basics of swarm prevention through cavity expansion and artificial swarms (splits). This class is aimed at first-year beekeepers who have successfully overwintered their first colony and are facing the excitement and challenges of their first 'spring boom.'
Instructor Bio: Alan Kramer is a small-scale hobbyist beekeeper and bee breeder in the Berkeley Hills close to Tilden Park, where he has been involved in beekeeping ever since a swarm chose to bivouac on a pine tree in his backyard 7 springs ago... Over the past 7 years, Alan has created more than 100 splits and bred hundreds of queens in his effort to make a small-scale source of locally-adapted open-bred queens and nucs available to the local East Bay beekeeping community.
