Also, featured will be newcomers Katie Kasari, Amanda Browning, and Megan McKinley of WKU Dance Department.
d a n a h b e l l a DanceWorks, a contemporary dance company based in Southwest Virginia, will premiere a new work, "space | separate" A solo work danced to Schubert's "Ave Maria," choreographer danah bella, explores a conversation with oneself and the choice to sever ties. Using the body as a living archive, bella recounts experiences and realizations through abstract movement.
Co-producer, Amber Marquez, will present work for the second time. Her premiere work, "Solitary Suffering is my Vibe" was inspired by an article written by an individual coping with borderline personality disorder. The author of the article expressed she was comforted by knowing she was not going through such a difficult situation alone. Marquez, having done her own research on the disorder, hopes to create a work that is both informative and emotionally moving.
Ila Conoley Paladino is returning to Louisville to set a new work on a trio of local dancers. Titled "Recycled Reality", the piece is about facing the reality you've has created for yourself and reinventing it.
University of Kentucky dance department director, Susie Thiel, and Moving Collective co-producer, Theresa Bautista will be premiering a duet entitled, "Paired but not Paired." Thiel and Bautista are collaborating to create movement that explores physical limits without the bias of gender.
Katie Kasari's new work "Lemmings Lament" explores collective behaviors, conformity, rebellion, and the influence of others.
Visiting lecturer at Western Kentucky University, Meghan McKinley, is presenting her work, "Drive," which premiered in November at the university. "Drive" explores the variety of how we respond to the urge to achieve and attain. McKinley's athletic movement reflects on personal and environmental influences.
Amanda Browning has appeared onstage with Moving Collective previously, but she is premiering her first work, "After Evensong." Browning's work is a narrative displaying an individual's personal struggle and the community of friends that come alongside her during her pursuit for resolution.
With the success of ten seasons behind them, Theresa Bautista, Amanda Johnson, Nicole André, and Amber Marquez are continuing to foster the growth of and appreciation for modern dance. Moving Collective exists not as a traditional dance company, but as a collection of independent and evolving choreographers and dancers from several states. We are performance-driven with goals to keep contemporary dance alive in Louisville and to provide a professional work atmosphere and venue for innovative choreographers and professionally-trained dancers.
Moving Collective was created by Theresa Bautista in 2005 and designed to provide the growing number of area choreographers an opportunity to showcase their work, utilizing the depth of talented contemporary dancers in the Louisville area. This year Moving Collective is thrilled to celebrate our 10th anniversary. As we look to the future we hope to bring another decade of dance to Louisville and the region.
