Habitat Hero Gardening for Beauty, Birds and Bees - 2nd Annual Workshop
 HABITAT HEROES - GARDENING FOR BEAUTY, BIRDS AND BEES
This workshop is for both novice and veteran gardeners who are interested in attracting wildlife and pollinators to an urban environment, eliminating chemicals in the landscape and minimizing water consumption. Explore design possibilities for making your garden beautiful and functional.
Habitat Heroes practice "wildscaping"- landscaping designed to use native plants, to minimize water consumption and to provide habitat for birds, bees and wildlife, large and small. Whether the landscape is a residential yard, a few pots on a balcony, a public park, schoolyard garden, orchard or farm, Habitat Heroes believe in growing healthy communities.
Working together, we can create a mosaic of habitats that link individual wildscapes to larger natural areas and reduce the loss of open space. With the right information and tools, these wildscape gardens are both beautiful and bird and bee friendly.
The morning will feature two prominent gardening and horticultural experts. The afternoon will give the participants individualized help in planning their gardens.
               Morning Speakers:
  Marcia Tatroe - Writer and columnist for Sunset Magazine and the Denver Post, and author of "Cutting Edge Gardening in the Intermountain West and Perennials for Dummies." Marcia will discuss how wildlife habitat can coexist within a covenant controlled community, and how to ensure your garden pleases both wildlife and fastidious neighbors.
  Deryn Davidson - CSU Horticulture Extension Agent for Boulder County. Deryn will explore how gardens can be designed to enhance the aesthetics of a site, attract pollinators and provide habitat for an array of wildlife.
Lunch at the LCCC cafeteria - Part of the registration fee.
               Afternoon Activities:
  Jamie Weiss - Audubon Rockies Habitat Hero Coordinator will recognize four gardens in Cheyenne that have been officially designated as Habitat Hero Gardens.
  Delina E. Dority - University of Wyoming graduate student will teach us how to identify the native bees she is studying.
  Individualized Garden Planning Help - The last two hours will be spent in small groups, allowing each participant to examine their individual garden spaces with local Master Gardeners.
        ***** Each participant must bring a sketch or overhead picture of their yard or garden space (see the attached examples). Please identify as many of these items as you can on your sketch:
Indicate North;
Show trees, buildings, shrubs and wind breaks;
Show which way water drains;
Show wet and dry spots and hot and cold spots in different seasons;
Show windy and calm (protected) areas by season;
Show views you want to enhance or block.
