The Three Yells: Her Name is Isaac
Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

The Three Yells presents "Her Name Is Isaac" a multidisciplinary dance work that draws attention to the treatment of women through a distinctly Asian lens. A current recipient of the Artist Trust GAP and Seattle Office of Arts & Culture smART Ventures grant, Artistic Director/choreographer of The Three Yells Veronica Lee-Baik began this project in April 2015 and developed it further during Cornish Playhouse's Arts Incubator Residency with the collaborative genius of Bellingham National Art Exhibition Award Winner Robert Campbell, lighting designer Meg Fox, and Fritz Rodriquez and Brendan Hogan for original music composition.

As a visual artist whose medium of choice is the body, Lee-Baik collaborates with artists from different disciplines to engage audiences viscerally. Dance, music and media co-exist in a live-activated stage space where dancers will have the autonomy to control sound and light cues through their movement. Lee-Baik's distinct style reflects ballet and modern dance styles through the prism of Asian aesthetics and traditions. Her unique movement vocabulary exhibits strong imagery and hyper-controlled motion contrasted with abandoned athleticism.

In an age when women earn 0.79 to every man's dollar, and are 11 times more likely to be killed by a gun in the U.S. than in other high-income countries, "Her Name Is Isaac" boldly presents a modern-day warrior dance that will resonate beyond the theatre to spur conversation around gender and equity.

The Three Yells creates art as activism through performance, education and outreach. The project includes outreach with Young-Women Empowered, a non-profit who empowers at-risk young women in the greater Seattle area and with a free community workshop open to the public at Cornish College in January 2016.

The community is invited to a post-performance talk-back with the company immediately following the Thursday night performance in the Cornish Playhouse lobby.

Please note the performance contains partial nudity and moments of extremely loud music.
