During this festive two hour guided tour, you'll learn about the past, present, and future of the Richardson Olmsted Complex and how the holidays were celebrated at institutions like ours in the 19th century! Please bring your holiday spirit and a $10-15 donation or a gift for our neighbors at the Buffalo Psychiatric Center. Any of the following for adult men and women are welcomed: clothing items such as winter hats, gloves, scarves, pajamas, shirts, sweatshirts, workout clothes, as well as personal hygiene supplies (in plastic bottles), jewelry, watches, headphones, activity books, puzzles, paperback books, etc. (please do not include anything breakable). Note that gifts should be unused, new items only. The tour will include access to all of the spaces on the Welcome Tour. The tour will interweave the philosophies that architect Henry Hobson Richardson, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, and psychiatrist Dr. Thomas Kirkbride integrated into the 140-year-old former state hospital facility with research on how the holidays were celebrated historically at such institutions. This is also an opportunity to see firsthand the transformation as the Complex is adaptively reused as a hospitality venue and cultural amenity for the city, beginning with Hotel Henry and the Buffalo Architecture Center in 1/3 of the buildings. PLEASE NOTE:
- This is a rare off-season tour opportunity tours end in October since the buildings retain the winter cold. Dress for the outdoor weather, including hats and gloves.
- Photography is not allowed on this tour. For those interested in taking photographs, please see our photography tours.
- This is an active construction site and hard hats will be provided. It is IMPERATIVE that you stay with the tour group in the designated areas there are very unsafe areas within the Complex as well as heavy construction.
