"The High Mountains of Portugal"

Don't miss a magical evening with the author of the bestselling Life of Pi as he returns to the storytelling power and luminous wisdom of his master novel. The High Mountains of Portugal takes us on a mesmerizing journey through the last century.

Told in three intersecting sections, part quest narrative, part ghost story, part contemporary fable, the novel begins in the early 1900s, when a young man named Tomás discovers in the episcopal archives of Lisbon an ancient journal describing an extraordinary artifact that he believes will redefine history. Traveling in one of Europe's earliest automobiles, he sets out for the High Mountains of Portugal in search of this strange treasure. Thirty-five years later, a pathologist devoted to the murder mysteries of Agatha Christie finds himself at the center of a mystery of his own and drawn into the consequences of Tomás's quest. And fifty years later, a Canadian senator takes refuge in his ancestral village in northern Portugal, grieving the loss of his beloved wife. But he arrives with an unusual companion: a chimpanzee. And there the century-old quest will come to an unexpected conclusion.

Filled with tenderness, humor, and endless surprise, Martel's new novel The High Mountains of Portugal takes the reader on a road trip through Portugal in the last centuryand through the human soul.

Yann Martel is the author of Life of Pi, the global bestseller that won the 2002 Man Booker Prize (among other honors) and was adapted to the screen in the Oscar-winning film by Ang Lee. He is also the author of the short story collection The Facts Behind the Helsinki Roccamatios, the novels Self and Beatrice and Virgil, and the nonfiction work 101 Letters to a Prime Minister.

Afghan American author Tamim Ansary wrote West of Kabul, East of New York,  San Francisco's  "One City One Book" selection for 2008, and Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes, winner of the Northern California Book Award for nonfiction.    His upcoming book Road Trips is a memoir set in the vapor trail of the sixties.
