The Snow Child
- Act One -

Once upon a time, in a faraway village, there lived a man and his wife. They loved one another dearly, but were unhappy because they did not have any children of their own. Magic was in the air as the snow queen brought the first snow. The falling snowflakes gracefully danced towards the ground as flurries floated through the air.

That day, the couple enjoyed watching  the children of the village as they played outside in the snow. When the sun began to set and the village children went home, the couple decided that they would make a child out of snow. A little girl. Slowly and carefully they shaped the snow. They made a little body with dainty hands and feet. Her dress was trimmed with icicles, and her hair was made of willow branches covered with frost. She was as perfect as she could be. They admired how beautiful she was and wished she were real. With a loving kiss they said goodnight. Just as they did this the snow child came to life! Her lips turned pink and warm breath came from her mouth. First she moved her head... then her arms... then her legs... The couple hugged the snow child tightly , they couldn't believe their wish had come true!

When it was time for bed, the woman made up a little bed with a warm blanket. But the snow child laughed and shook her head. She told her that she must sleep outside where it is cold, and she ran out into the garden to sleep on her skirt of snow. Every night she slept there. And every night the snow queen watched over the sleeping snow child. The moon and stars shone down upon her and she smiled as she slept. All was well.

During the cold winter the snow child played with the village children. She brought magic and holiday cheer to the village. They were all as happy as they could be as they danced in the shinning holiday lights!

- Act Two-

At last Spring came, and the sun warmed the land. Birds returned from far-off places, and buds opened in the garden. The children of the village were glad. They made garlands with the beautiful spring flowers and danced and sang in the sunlight. They called to the snow child to come and play, but she could not. She hid from the sun and sat in the shade by the cottage.

The couple grew worried and tried to comfort the snow child, yet she grew sadder and weaker as the days grew warmer. Then one morning, when the last snow had melted, the snow queen returned. She told the couple that she must take the snow child to where it was cold. They held her close, and a few drops of snow fell to the ground. Quickly she slipped from their arms and floated away with gust of swirling snowflakes.

The snow child was gone, and the couple wept. They thought they would never see her again. All summer long the village children played, the birds sang and flowers bloomed all around the cottage. But the man and his wife could only think of their little girl.

- Act Three-

The following winter, when the first snow fell, the couple looked out into the garden. There stood the snow child. They rushed outside and kissed her! The snow child smiled, and then she spoke: "I am a child of the snow. I come back to you as cold winds blow."

The snow child stayed with the man and his wife all through the winter. Then, when spring came, she left once more. But the couple were no longer sad. They knew that their snow child would return to them every winter forever after.
