"The Elephants in the Room" a talk by Martin Rowe
The Elephants in the Room: Wangari Maathai, Daphne Sheldrick, and Me
Wangari Maathai (19402011) was a Kenyan environmentalist, social justice activist, and campaigner for civil and women's rights. In 2004, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote democracy, the environment, and peace. In an intimate portrait of this remarkable woman, writer and publisher Martin Rowe, who for twelve years worked closely with Professor Maathai on her books, relates her life and times in the context of another Kenyan environmentalist, Daphne Sheldrick, who for years has run an orphanage for baby rhinos and elephants in Nairobi. Rowe then explores the work of these two women in the context of the legacy of colonialism and the poaching of elephant tusks and rhino horns that continues to challenge Africa.
