Zooman and the Sign by Charles Fuller
In the play Zooman and the Sign, Charles Fuller paints a timely portrait of the impact of neighborhood violence on an inner city community. Zooman, a Black teen, randomly kills Jinny Tate, a 12 year-old girl on an inner city street filled with eyewitnesses. However, no one comes forward to identify the killer. To challenge his neighbors' apathy, the girl's father, Reuben Tate, puts up a sign accusing the community of cowardice. The sign causes a major upheaval among the neighbors. Instead of attracting help, the sign infuriates the neighbors, and leads to increasing stress within the already troubled Tate household. Fuller's message is that our communities must either stand up for justice or they will be destroyed by apathy.
