Hood Mountain BioBlitz Hike
Join Sonoma County Regional Parks' Natural Resources Manager Melanie Parker on a "BioBlitz" hike and help catalog the park's natural history. This is one of two BioBlitzes that will let hikers learn from one another while exploring routes featured in the Sonoma County Trails Challenge. We will photograph and upload observations of plants, birds, animal signs and other natural features into iNaturalist.org, a site for sharing what we see in nature. The first BioBlitz is at Hood Mountain Regional Park & Open Space Preserve in the Mayacamas Range on the edge of the Sonoma Valley, where we will explore oak woodland and mixed conifer forest. (Meet at the Pythian Road parking lot.) The next BioBlitz is Friday, Oct. 9, on the Pinnacle Gulch Coastal Access Trail in Bodega Bay, where we will explore the coastal prairie habitat. You're welcome to attend one or both hikes. In addition to your curiosity and enthusiasm, please bring your smart phone, binoculars and field guide (if you have them), a lunch, and water. These outings may last until mid-afternoon, depending on findings.
The Trails Challenge invites you to discover Sonoma County's parks by hiking five or more trails before Dec. 1. When you're done, turn in a brief online trails log and get a free Trails Challenge water bottle. Get started today at sonomacountyparks.org.
