Hamlet Isn't Dead Present: Richard II and Romeo and Juliet

Power, passion, and politics reign in Hamlet Isn't Dead's "Vendetta Duology." Whether violence and corruption rule the streets or the courts, Shakespeare's stories of civil strife continue to resonate today. Hamlet Isn't Dead is thrilled to return to Westbeth Artists Community to present Shakespeare's most famous lovers and his most downtrodden king. Utilizing the same eight actors, Romeo and Juliet and Richard II will be performed in rep, continuing HID's mission to present Shakespeare's canon chronologically and explore the Bard's immortal themes.

Emily C. A. Snyder directs Richard II:

"For God's sake, let us sit upon the ground
And tell sad stories of the death of kings" - Richard II, III.2

How much can you truly love something, until you know its loss?  Shakespeare's history plays, which begin chronologically with Richard II, watch the throw and overthrow of king after king, as each new contender vies to possess the hollow crown. At a time when politics and ideologies continue to divide brother from brother, this production explores the shifting allegiances, collateral damage, unexpected humor, and the fragile loneliness of power which still haunt us to this day.

David Andrew Laws directs Romeo and Juliet:

Romeo and Juliet is a play about survival. We are thrust into a world where violence constantly erupts on the city streets; where hate and revenge sit on the tip of every tongue; and where star-crossed lovers fight their fate from the beginning to the tragic end. We are aware, more than ever, of the constant and present danger in today's society, and Romeo & Juliet's Verona is no different. Join us for an earthy, close, and heart-breaking tale as Italy's most infamous feud comes to a disastrous head.
