Jill E. Clarridge, III, received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from Purdue University and her Clinical Microbiology postdoctoral training at Baylor College of Medicine. She served as Chief of the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Section of the Veterans Administration laboratory and on the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston TX for 25 years before coming to the Pacific Northwest to serve in a similar capacity at the Seattle VA and the University of Washington. She is now Professor Emerita in the UW Department of Laboratory Medicine.
The title of her talk is Epigenetics: "The next big thing for understanding the weird and wonderful variations in our health and behaviors." Jill has a unique talent for making complicated scientific issues accessible and fun to learn.
Epigenetics is the study, in the field of genetics, of cellular and physiological phenotypic trait variations that are caused by external or environmental factors that switch genes on and off and affect how cells read genes instead of being caused by changes in the DNA sequence. Google "epigenetics" and see what you have been missing!
