Forgotten Chicago UIC & Near West Side Walking Tour
The decades-long story of the creation of a Chicago branch of the University of Illinois can be seen as both a triumph of urban renewal and the removal of a vibrant ethnic enclave. UIC celebrated its 50th anniversary in February 2015, and is today is seen as a key component of the regional economy despite its controversial beginnings. Join Forgotten Chicago for an all-new tour exploring this campus and the surrounding areas that remain intact today, one of Chicago's oldest and most vibrant neighborhoods.
The area in and around UIC is full of curiosities, including a 40-year old enclosed former shopping center by Metz Train Olson & Youngren, notable as a miniature version of a suburban shopping mall such as Woodfield, and once boasting extensive rooftop parking and a full-service Jewel grocery store. We will also examine the many remnants of the original plan of UIC, including the former "sidewalks in the sky" throughout the campus.
