A People's History of America
A PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF AMERICA, presented by HanaHana Dance Collective in association with Invisible Lines. One night only, July 5th at 7pm at 14 Pews (800 Aurora St, Houston, TX 77009).
Based on Howard Zinn's book "A People's History of the United States," this performance brings to light voices from U.S. history that have routinely been silenced, including those of women, the working class, African Americans, Native Americans, and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, & queer (GLBTQ) people. By giving public expression to rebels, dissenters, and visionaries from our past and present we work to educate and inspire a new generation of people working for social justice.
Incorporating elements of Japanese Butoh, postmodern dance, poetry, multimedia, and performance art, this performance intends to honor the struggle for freedom that forms an instrumental part of this nation's history. With the historic 14 Pews Art House as our venue, both artist and audience will collectively celebrate and commemorate the incredible power and resilience harnessed by people who once had no power whether people of color, gay people, or women and the freedoms they rightfully claimed in the face of great adversity.
