Transference dynamics are shifted whenever self-disclosure occurs. Some things are automatically disclosed (or assumed) by the patient: race, gender, or age for example. Changes in the therapist's body, such as pregnancy, injury, weight loss/gain or even shaving/growing a beard can bring up unconscious material for the patient. LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) clinicians can choose to disclose their sexual identities, whereas pre-medical transition therapists are forced to bring their personal lives into the therapeutic space as their bodies change through hormones and/or surgery. Drawing parallels from literature on transference dynamics during a therapist's pregnancy, this talk will explore transference shifts that can occur after the therapist's double mastectomy and chest reconstruction. Vignettes based on cases of transgender patients who were in treatment with a transgender man who had chest reconstruction during the course of their treatment will be presented.
