Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age

MIT Profesor Sherry Turkle certainly raised eyebrows and awareness with her last book, Alone Together, in which she argued that the relentless connection through social media and technology actually leads to more solitude.

At this event, she'll be presenting her much-anticipated follow up work,  Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age.

Turkle, the founding director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, explores the danger that text messaging is replacing in-depth, face-to-face conversation. While Turkle recognizes the importance of digital engagement, in Reclaiming Conversation she reminds us what is important about language and its power to move us, expand our thinking, and deepen our relationships.

As Silicon Valley residents we understand perhaps better than anyone that the technological universe we live in encourages connection and communication, but at what cost?  Have we sacrificed conversation for mere connection?

There is an urgency to Turkle's message, the need to preserve human qualities that are eroding while our devices receive our attention - empathy, deep creativity, and focused mentoring of our children.

This is sure to be a lively discussion -- don't miss this unique opportunity to come face to face with Sherry Turkle.

SHERRY TURKLE has spent the last 30 years studying the psychology of people's relationships with technology. She is the Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at MIT. Turkle is the author five books and three edited collections, including a trilogy of three landmark studies on our relationship with digital culture: The Second Self, Life on the Screen and most recently, Alone Together. A recipient of a Guggenheim and Rockefeller Humanities Fellowship, she is a featured media commentator. She is a recipient of a Harvard Centennial Medal and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
