LEDGE LIGHTHOUSE tour INSIDE the light aboard the Project Oceanology boat, Envirolab II
Departs from UConn at Avery Point, Groton, CT

Ledge Light Station, built in 1909, is one of the most famous lighthouses in America.  Its stately brick structure with mansard roof, makes it unique.  There is no other lighthouse like it.

Step on board the comfortable Project Oceanology boat, Envirolab II, and take a pleasant 10 to 15 minute narrated ride to Ledge Light at the mouth of the Thames River in Long Island Sound.  The lighthouse is offshore, surrounded by water on all four sides.  Access does require some degree of mobility, as you step off the boat onto the landing ledge and climb up a stairway to the entrance to the lighthouse.  Once inside, Ledge Light Foundation volunteer tour guides will be on hand to answer questions as you explore rooms filled with informational and historical exhibit panels and photographs.  There's an air conditioned theater where you will watch a compelling orientation film.  You will be free to wander the rooms of the lighthouse, including the light tower at the top, dreaming of what life was like back in the day when keepers lived their secluded lives in the middle of the sea.  There's a room furnished as it would have been when the keepers were there.  Maybe you'll even run into Ernie, the resident ghost!  Stop by the gift shop where you can purchase lighthouse related products.  There are benches outside circling the perimeter where you can sit and enjoy the best views in town while waiting for the boat to return you to shore.  Your entire excursion will take two and a half hours.

Tours operate in July and August on Tuesdays at 4:00pm and Saturdays at 1:30pm.   Click on the drop down menu on the booking page for all tour dates.

Tours depart from Project Oceanology in Groton AND also from City Pier in New London. To book a tour from New London, copy and paste this link into your browser:  http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1620547

All tours are weather dependent.  Please check your email inbox prior to departing for the dock.  We will notify you by email if the tour is canceled.

Arrive at the Project Oceanology building, on the UConn campus at Avery Point in Groton 30 minutes prior to departure time. Free parking is available in the Project O parking lot.  Wear comfortable clothes and sensible walking shoes.  Food and drink, with the exception of water, is not permitted on the lighthouse.  For safety reasons, NO alcoholic beverages are permitted on the boat or at the lighthouse.  There are public restrooms in the Project Oceanology building and aboard the boat, but no public restrooms inside the lighthouse.

Thank you for your support of this Connecticut treasure.  We look forward to welcoming you,
