Pilgrims Musa and Sheri in the New World
Pilgrims Musa and Sheri in the New World garnered the American Theatre Critics' Steinberg prize for best new play of 2011. Egyptian-born playwright Yussef El Guindi's play premiered at ACT in Seattle to enthusiastic reviews and has since been staged by Center Rep in San Francisco and by New York's Mixed Blood Theatre. It was published in American Theatre in 2012.
Preconceptions collide as a casual hookup between Musa, new immigrant cabdriver, and Sheri, jaded waitress at a late night diner, turns serious. Underlying this quirky romantic tale with what Variety characterized as "giddy, 'Who's on first?'-style dialogue" are the hard choices that immigrants must deal with in this New World.
Julian Findlay plays Musa to Kaitlin Creed Boyd's Sheri under the direction of Kim Mancuso. Annalise Cain plays Musa's Egyptian American fiancee who returns inconveniently early from Cairo where she was finalizing plans for their wedding. Tony Jones is Abdallah, a Sudanese immigrant to the US who decides to make the Hajj to Mecca in thankfulness for the success he has had in the New World. Musa's conservative Somali friend Tayyib is played by Kent Alexander.
Pilgrims runs July 23 through August 2; Thursdays at 7:30, Friday and Saturday at 8 pm, and Sundays at 2 pm.
