The 22nd Annual Clallam County Garden Tour will feature seven spectacular gardens.
Garden #1 is a 1.25 acre parcel that was bare and featureless when the homeowners built here nine years ago. Designed with year-round color in mind, a welcoming garden now reflects the talents of a creative partnership and a deep love of artful gardening. The property showcases a fire pit surrounded by native trees and a natural rock wall berm enhanced by a stream and pond. Pathways lead through intimate garden spaces enlivened by a stream and a pond. Throughout the garden, textures, shape, and form are complemented by art that includes works in wood, rusted metal, and stained and fused glass created by the homeowners, adding whimsy and charm.
Garden #2 is at the end of a long road and a circle drive where a property greets you with a beautiful grape arbor inviting you into the home entrance. The walkway has some unique stonework and numerous shade plants. But the treasurers lie hidden behind this home and past a beautiful gazebo. The rose garden includes sixty-one named roses so have your camera ready. Two other gardens will draw your interest with many dahlias and irises. A new compost area is ideal for the small home gardener. This "do it yourself" property will provide you with many ideas.
Garden #3 showcases how the home owner met the challenges of wind roaring across the Sequim Prairie and the lack of plant nutrients in wet clay soil. He uses multiple raised beds full of lush plantings. Plants and trees are creatively sited to strategically act as wind barriers. Rustic structures made of recycled materials not only add to the beauty of this garden, but also help to protect the garden from the wind. Unique yard art includes a water fountain made in the shape of a gunnera leaf that reflects the actual gunnera plant across the way. Seating throughout the garden provides places to relax and view this unique beauty.
Garden #4 was an unimproved five acre parcel purchased in 2000 as a place for the owners to visit on vacation. In 2012, the owners moved here and continued turning the property into the work in progress it is today. The many various gardens and paths are made up of native trees and shrubs, wildflowers, shade lovers, perennials, ornamental plants as well as abundant edibles. The gardens often have visits from elk, coyote, deer, bald eagles, and birds, along with the human guests. Enjoy the aptly named cottage garden, meditation trail, fountain garden, and waterfall beds just to name a few of the colorful and ever changing landscapes.
Garden #5 features a wraparound porch, filled with tubs and baskets of color, that provides comfortable seating and views to the strait and Victoria. In the garden below, a waterfall flows to a duck pond and gazebo. A woodland village of cabins includes a treehouse and protected home for the chickens. Two fenced garden spaces protect the fruit and vegetable plantings. Throughout, vintage garden equipment provides visual interest, and numerous seating areas invite you to relax and enjoy this tranquil 3.5-acre hillside garden.
Garden #6 presented the home owners with the challenge of stringent restrictions of working around a greenbelt on the county irrigation ditch. Careful design planning resulted in a beautiful meld of the greenbelt and the neighboring landscape. Using the down-slope, curved rivers of grass flow around large raised islands of plants. Drip irrigation lines water over 300 plants and trees. Red and gold accents abound with fifteen different Japanese maples, plum, red bud trees, and smoke bushes. Natural salal and red bark mulch complete the painting, with large rocks mimicking nature.
Garden #7, developed and planted by the homeowners, was designed to provide color throughout the growing season, from the earliest daffodils, through tulips, lilacs, flowering trees, rhododendrons, bearded iris, roses, summer perennials, and dahlias, culminating with lots of bright fall foliage. The rose garden and patio are enclosed by fencing to protect from the ever-wandering deer, as is a section of the garden dedicated to vegetables and fruit trees. Enjoy the view of Sequim and Vancouver Island as you meander throughout the various themed areas of the garden.
