Background:
Many people are unaware of an important historical event that took place in Portland in 1855 The Portland Rum Riot. Although political mobbing and riots were fairly common in the mid-1800's, very few were directly related to prohibition. One other known event occurred in Chicago in April in 1855. Neal Dow, known as the "Tsar of Temperance" and the spark for the 1855 event, is buried at Evergreen Cemetery here in Portland. Friends of Evergreen, a local non-profit whose mission is to help preserve and maintain the 229 acre cemetery, is embarking on an event to commemorate the 160th anniversary of The Portland Rum Riot. In 2014, a Portland Rum Riot tour was added to our roster of walking tours at the cemetery. Evergreen Cemetery is the largest open space in Portland and although it is utilized daily by the local Deering community, because of its location on the outskirts of the city, many in Portland are unaware of its striking beauty and the history it holds. We thought it was time to bring to life and to the streets of Portland where they once lived and shaped our community, some of the residents interred at Evergreen. We are focused on the historical aspect of the social and political events that led to the 1855 riot and since sugar and rum production were such a large part of Portland's history.
