JCTC New Play Readings is an evening where actors perform a Staged-Reading of a new play by an emerging playwright.

Evening begins with Justice  an exhibit at JCTC's art gallery  curated by Gabriel Pacheco of Jersey City Artist showcased include Pauline Chernichaw, Grigory Guervich, Jerry Khan, Alice Harrison, Grace Marquinhos, Gabriel Pacheco, Barbara Petersen, Philip Robinson, Lucy Rovetto, Jay Rubinstein, Ashley-Simone McKenzie, and Voodo Fè. "This exhibit aims to move the discussion of Justice from broad abstract concepts to an understanding of justice or the reverse, injustice, as something people experience daily," said Pacheco.

JCTC New Play Readings features "Mama's Gonna Buy You," by Chisa Hutchinson, about a strained relationship between a pregnant teen, who is African American, and an older white woman, is a potent, often toxic tale of motherhood, race and class. Hutchinson, whose work has been presented at SummerStage, Mad Dog Theater Company, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the South Orange Performing Arts Center, the Contemporary American Theater Festival, and the Playwrights Theatre of New Jersey, is the recipient of a GLAAD Award, the John Golden Award for Excellence in Playwriting, a New York Innovative Theatre Award, the Paul Green Award, a Helen Merrill Award, and the Lanford Wilson Award.

"Mama's Gonna Buy You," was selected to kick off the New Play Reading series by Lia Romeo, a playwright, novelist, and comic writer, who is curating the New Play Reading project for JCTC. Romeo, who lives in Hoboken, grew up in Colorado in a mixed-race family and is personally aware of the injustice of white privilege. "I know how difficult it was for my brothers, who are black, to navigate racial identify and prejudice," she said. "The way Chisa looks at issues of race and society spoke to me personally."
