IN FLIGHT - A New Play in Rhyming Couplets by Jenny Lyn Bader
It is an honor to premiere this piece
Announcing, For Immediate Release:
This May at WorkShop Theater we will start
A play that explores business versus art.
(It's also the first verse play we have seen
Set at an in-flight airline magazine.)
Marty, our harried editor-in-chief,
Decides to work there based on her belief
That she can hire her starving poet friends
To voyage out and write on travel trends;
They will be paid a living wage to roam,
While truth and beauty get a corporate home.
But faster than Molière could eat croissants,
She sees she can't just hire whoever she wants
Since Melanie, the glamorous CEO,
Has her own agenda and likes to run the show.
When Melanie fires her favorite stylist,
Should Marty go from idealist to nihilist?
The plot soon thickens beyond whom to hire
As all that she believes in comes under fire:
A man appears who seems to share her dreams
Meanwhile, Marty learns of the boss' schemes.
Our heroine confronts love, war, and disguise
As art and business each spin their own lies.
As Marty navigates the corporation,
She also gets a moral education.
And with every setback she must suffer
She starts to wonder if she should get tougher...
Does poetry have a place in the world today?
What does that placement cost us, anyway?
Are money and power powerful, alone?
Might poetry have a power of its own?

And turns of phrase are never merely words.
