Vermont Swings is proud to bring you a weekend of dancing with Collegiate Shag & Lindy Hop! Join us as we welcome guest instructors Owen Hortop, Katy Borbridge and Alcina Chiu from Cat's Corner in Montreal for a weekend workshops, live music and dancing!
We're so excited to bring Collegiate Shag to Burlington on Saturday, May 2nd with an afternoon of beginner-friendly workshops! The fancy footwork adapts well to faster tempos and many moves are similar to those found in other Swing Era dances.
For a demonstration of Collegiate Shag, see this performance by the Cat's Corner Collegiate Shag performance troupe, Les Shagnifiques: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHVva0rWrHc

Instructor Bios:
Owen Hortop has been hooked on dancing since 2005, inspired by the warmth and openness of the Montreal community. He is known for his energy and joy on the dance floor, and his down-to-earth teaching style in classes. Owen's philosophy is that all human beings dance, we just might not always understand the dances of others. Come talk to him about Taoism, modern feminism, the global economy, or the ergonomics of jazz dance. Owen has been teaching various swing dances at Cat's Corner since 2008, and is a very proud coach to Les Shagnifiques, Montreal's local Collegiate Shag troupe. He has brought his troupe to performance venues in New York City as well as to the Canadian Swing Championships. Although not very competitive, he's brought home medals for Collegiate Shag from Ottawa, Ontario and Austin, Texas.
Katy Borbridge has been dancing Shag since 2012, although she's been loving jazz and swing for much longer than that! Her first dance experience was in traditional Irish dancing, where she was a prizewinning dancer before moving on to swing. She stands out on any dance floor thanks to her precise footwork and playful style. Katy coaches Les Shagnifiques in Montreal with her partner, Owen Hortop, and teaches Collegiate Shag wherever people are interested in learning!
Alcina Chiu is known for her creativity, musicality, and joy on the dance floor and embodies the essence of swing. Since she took her first swing class in Toronto, she quickly made a name for herself as an instructor, performer, and social dancer. She enjoys dancing with beginners and advanced dancers alike and wants to help the swing scene grow. Alcina travels a lot for swing, organizing and working at events across North America and enjoys bringing a different perspective to her students. As a competitor, she has brought home medals from Ottawa (Shag), Montreal (CSC, CCX), and Buffalo (Balboa and Lindy), to name a few. She is excited that her first foray into Vermont is for one of her favourite activities!
