RICHMOND DANCE FESTIVAL at Dogtown Dance Theatre

As the seed of last year's season begins to blossom, the Richmond Dance festival begins to solidify the infrastructure  of the annual event. In its second year, the festival has taken root in the Richmond community! Reaching out to various parts of the city, the festival is proud to present a variety of artists from Richmond, VA. From local community dance troupes, to established tenured dance companies', this year the festival is dedicated to integrating art within the Richmond community. Sewing together numerous cultural backgrounds, and viewpoints, the festival hopes to provide a common place where Richmond audiences can experience multiple performances,  workshops, and home-grown artist.
Richmond Dance Festival Concerts/Events:

Weekend One!

COLLABORATE: April 23rd 8pm, April 25th 8pm  (Thursday/Saturday)

The first concert of the festival, the Richmond Dance Festival presents two well-known companies in the Richmond area. RVA Dance Collective, and Agua Dulce Dance Theater share an evening of collaborative works. With a common interest in creating multi-layered works with various artists from different mediums, both companies use collaboration and partnership as a main pinning in their creation process.

CONNECT: April 24th 8pm. April 25th 3pm (Friday/Saturday-matinee)

Ivy Bryngelson, Kara Robertson, Abigail Jane Axelrod, and a new collective of artist-The Long Distance Movers, present new and reconstructed works inspired by the various modes of connection in relation to dance and the human condition. Distance, spatial integrity, and human relationships are themes connecting the various independent artists in this evening of interpersonal exchange.  

Weekend Two: RVA DANCE WORKSHOPS

RVA Dance Films Workshop- May 7th, 8pm (Friday)

Dance on camera has had a major influence on dance creation and growth in the past decade- with dance film festivals popping up across the country. Selected from a intense adjudication process, the films presented within this evening perfectly connect the film medium to that of the dance medium, proving that art has no limits!

RVA NEW SEEDS (Dance Workshop/Informal Showing)- May 8th, 8pm (Saturday)

A new workshop, NEW SEEDS!  Offers new upcoming choreographers a chance to present work in an informal non-curated environment and receive audible feedback.  A low tech concert, the artist and audience will see the bones and skeletons of each work, providing perfect opportunities for the participating artist involved to take root in the Richmond community. Artist involved this year: Samantha Nelson, Rebecca Weiss, Holly Maddock, Morgahn Crawford, and Callie Moore.  

Weekend Three!

EDUCATE: May 8th 8pm. May 9th 3pm (Friday/Saturday-matinee)

Two highly involved community dance companies join forces to present an evening of educational yet empowering work! MalayaWorks Dance Theatre, and Taalema Diamonds of Culture4mykids are both known for their community based work spreading multiple message through dance art. Responding to contemporary issues, the concert will educate the audience both mentally and emotionally on topics ranging from immigration to the push and perseverance of inner city youth from Richmond, VA!

THRIVE: May 7th 8pm. May 9th 8pm (Thursday/Saturday-night)

Presented in the final concert of the Richmond Dance Festival, Ground Zero Dance, and Johnnie Cruise Mercer and TheREDProject join forces to mixed works that will appeal to various audiences! From two different generational voices, the concert creates an opportunity to see one established company, and one emerging company in the Richmond area. A passing the baton ceremony of sorts, the evening of work will provide the audience with a perfect representation of the passing of time, and the community's consistent yet evolving dance scene.
