Wine Dinner with Sebastien Riffault

On Friday, March 27th, Vinland welcomes Sebastien Riffault, one of the last producers of real Sancerre.

Sancerre, the AOP region in the eastern Loire where Sauvingon Blanc reigns supreme, has long been celebrated for some of the most vibrant, elegant, and age-worthy white wines in the world, along with smaller amounts of delicate and bright Pinot Noir.

Riffault grows both. Sadly, in this challenging, northern wine region (slightly north of Fort Kent, ME), the vast majority of growers today avoid the pitfalls of late autumn by harvesting their grapes before they're ripe, and then adding sugar, coloring, and a host of other additives to produce consistent, inoffensive, dead wines.

Not Sebastien Riffault. He is one of the last to risk the vagaries of the season and leave his grapes on the vine until they're truly ripe, by which point they've often been "afflicted" with botrytis, the "noble rot" that brings such exquisite flavors to the dessert wines of Sauternes. His wines are intensely perfumed but surprisingly dry, carrying no residual sugar, only, as he once put it, "the memory of sugar." These wines are all natural, totally alive, and absolutely delicious.

We believe that Sebastien is one of the greatest winemakers in the world today, a man of passion whose devotion to his land and his craft are perfectly manifested in the quality of his wine. We think this is a rare opportunity to dine and drink with one of the greats.

We do not want to rush this experience, so we are doing one seating only, and expect to sell every seat. We hope you will appreciate the conviviality of the evening, and understand if your party shares a table with another.

One seating at 7 p.m. Limited to 35 seats.
$120 per person for the tasting menu and paired wines,
plus 28% for tax and base gratuity.
